Turn Row Talks a Resounding Success

On July 23, 24, and 25, the Mississippi Soybean Promotion Board (MSPB), Mississippi State University (MSU) Extension Service, and the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) sponsored a series of Irrigation Management Turn Row talks on 10 Delta farms that are located in Tunica, Coahoma, Quitman, Bolivar, Sunflower, Leflore, Tallahatchie, Washington, Humphreys, and Sharkey Counties. The talks were a part of MSPB’s Sustainable Irrigation Project (SIP).

The talks featured on-farm demonstrations of the water conservation measures PHAUCET, surge valves, and soil moisture sensors that can be used by farmers to more efficiently irrigate Delta crops. Presenters included farmer-cooperators and MSU Extension Specialists. An average of 33 attendees were at the 10 sites during the 3 days, with a total attendance of 328.

The MSPB expresses its sincere appreciation to the presenters and MSU Extension staff. Special gratitude is accorded to Mr. Justin Ferguson, MFBF’s Director for Region 1. Justin was a driving force in getting these talks planned, selecting farmer sites, and coordinating the times at each site for the 3 days. This is just the latest in Justin’s efforts in support of SIP. The MSPB and its staff greatly appreciate his efforts in the ongoing SIP initiatives that started late in 2013.

The MSPB recognizes that the water conservation efforts that have been started and promoted through the SIP initiative are a dynamic process, and that new programs must be continually promoted so that this issue is always at the forefront of Delta irrigator’s plans. Therefore, the MSPB and its staff have begun planning SIP activities for the fall and winter seasons so that new, forthcoming information and technologies related to irrigation water conservation are available to Delta producers. Please check our website regularly for these updates and future plans.
